CAUSATIVE AGENTS/SOURCES

ANALYSIS

Standard Plate Count

I. SPC>10,000 CFU/ML

(10-50% of SPC are psycrotrophs)

  1. Errors in cooling milk

  2. Errors in cleaning equipment

  3. Rarely a cause of sub clinical mastitis(especially mastitis caused by Streptococcus spp.)

  4. Unclean udders before milking

  5. Poor teat and teat-end sanitation

 

Laboratory Pasteurization Count

II. LPC>200 CFU/ML

(May include species of Micrococcus, Microbacterium, Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Clostridium, and occasionally Streptococci)

  1. Unclean Equipment

  2. Improper sanitation practices

  3. Milkstone deposits

 

Somatic Cell Count

III. SCC>500,000CFU/ML

  1. Infected individuals in heard
 

Preliminary Incubation Count IV. PIC>10,000 CFU/ML

(Not associated w/mastitis pathogens)

(Gram-negative and Pseudomonas account for 50%)

 (Gram-positive mostly Enterococcus and Streptococcus)

  1. Ineffective cow preparation (teat dip)

  2. Poop milking hygiene
