PFA
 Pericardial Fluid Analysis
PURPOSE:
Samples are visually examined for abnormalities, tested to
determine their (WBC's) white blood cell count, and cultured
for pathogens, which assists medical professionals in
identifying whether pericarditis is the cause of pericardial effusion and determining
appropriate therapy.
TURN
AROUND TIME:
Presumptive results are available in as little as 48 hours
from the time that the sample is received by our lab.
Confirmation of presumptive results takes
an additional 24 hours. Estimated
test time is dependent on specific test and on when test is
initiated. Samples received in late afternoon or evening will
not be started until the following morning, unless RUSH/STAT
analysis is requested, in which an additional fee is applied.
TYPICAL
POSITIVE RESULTS:
Fluid:
- Bloody
WBC's:
- >1000/l (SI, 1 x 10⁹/L)
Culture:
- Positive for pathogens
NORMAL
VALUES/NEGATIVE RESULTS:
Fluid:
- 0 to 50 ml of sterile fluid in the pericardium. Fluid should
be clear or straw-colored.
WBC's:
- <1000/l (SI, 1 x 10⁹/L)
Culture:
- Negative for pathogens
