WBD White Blood Cell Differential

PURPOSE:                                                                                                                            Blood samples are evaluated for five types of leukocytes (Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils, Lymphocytes, and Monocytes). Each is given a count and a percentage.  White blood cell differential results assist medical professionals in confirming leukocytosis, leukopenia, neutrophilia, neutropenia, eosinophilia, lymphocytosis, or monocytosis. Results can also be used as a tool to monitor an individuals cell levels after medical treatment.

TURN AROUND TIME:                                                                                              Results are available the same day that the sample is received by our lab. Estimated test time is dependent on specific test and on when test is initiated. Samples received in late afternoon or evening will not be started until the following morning, unless RUSH/STAT analysis is requested, in which an additional fee is applied.

TYPICAL POSITIVE RESULTS:                                                                          Increased or decreased levels of neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and/or monocytes.

NORMAL VALUES/NEGATIVE RESULTS:                                                      Normal values for each of the five types of white blood cells.

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:                                                                                          Sample Collection:                                                                                                           Qualified individuals should draw blood (5 mL) in a test tube containing an anticoagulant (EDTA, sometimes citrate, [not provided by RML]) and submit specimen. Individuals collecting samples should use aseptic technique and employ proper protocols when collecting samples intended for lab testing (e.g. use of gloves, avoid contaminating sampling equipment & containers, proper storage after sampling, etc).                                                                                          Chain of Custody:                                                                                                              Label container with sample number, collection date & time, sample description (Type, Lot, Sell by date, case history, source, etc), and analysis requested.
